Wealth and Courage
Recently, a gentleman said that if Allah gives him wealth, he will spend a lot on people. Therefore, he prays a lot to Allah for abundant wealth. I advised him that if this is the purpose, don’t just pray for wealth, but also ask Allah for the courage to spend it. Spending money is not dependent on how much you have, it has more to do with how much courage you possess.
Spending wealth is a great act of worship. The way the Quran and hadith praise it, few other acts of worship are praised. A reward of seven-folds as well as it being the same as lending money to Allah have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an only in relation to spending money. But wealth has a peculiar property. As we attain it, the urge to count it, collect it, gather it, fill up the safe and bank account with it, keeps growing.
If a person practices courage, he spends this wealth on his own self and desires. But the courage to spend this wealth on others and to give one’s own wealth to people is rarely there. This courage is given only to those who have a special grace of Allah. These are the servants whom Allah Ta’ala chooses for His mercy in this world and in the hereafter. Their hearts are filled with the pain of humanity, the love of relatives and the spirit of helping God’s religion.
After which a person does not fear the thought of diminishing wealth. He spends and Allah gives him more. Even when they are short on funds, they do not hold back. These are the people who will be lenders to Allah on the Day of Judgment and will be rewarded seven-fold for their good deeds.
